Talk About the Daily Grind!
Do You Grind In-House... or Only Wish You Did?
Thank the Good Lord for the invention of the modern-day production grinding machine. Where would we be without it? All the extra smooth surfaces we need in our modern-day civilization could not be possible if not for the venerable old grinding machine. Just about any metalworking shop could make use of some form of grinding machines. With all the different variations there are of the metal grinding machines, one or another is going to be a close fit to just about any company's grinding needs. Have you thought about obtaining a grinder in the past and just couldn’t justify the purchase? "Well, we don’t really do anything that requires any kind of grinding machine," you remember telling yourself. But is that really the case? No matter what kind of fabrication work you do (or any other kind of metalworking, for that matter), you could probably benefit at least from some small "sharpening grinder." Speaking of sharpening grinders, sometimes referred to as "cutter grinders," how many different types of grinders are we talking about here? Well, it’s funny you ask that question, because we were just getting into that topic! As is the case with many other popular machine tools, numerous variations of grinders have been conceived over the years to accomplish specific tasks. We don't have the space to go into all those here, so we'll look at the top four most common grinder types currently in use in the metalworking industry.
Are the Most Prolific Grinders Likely to Be Found in the Used Grinder Section?
If we are including the most popular grinder types by some measure of, say the most likely to be found in the most places, then hands down it’s the benchtop cutter grinder, also called the tool grinder. This versatile little grinder can usually resharpen just about any HSS (High Speed Steel) or HSCo (High Speed Cobalt) round cutting tool and recondition the point in the same setup. These grinders will also resharpen flutes of cutting tools, so it can be used on end mills as well. Next has to be the flat surface grinder, in any size from one that would fit on a bench top, to grinders with a maximum grinding length as long as 40 feet or even more. These grinders grind smooth surfaces on flat stock as well as flat areas on metal castings. Besides making the surface of a part very smooth, many parts that require a grinding operation do so because of the need to be extremely flat, which the flat surface grinder excels at. Next is probably the cylindrical grinder. In the metalworking industry, almost as many parts that need surface grinding require cylindrical grinding for internal or external piece parts. Creep feed grinders are the next type of grinder that can be mentioned in this conversation. They are named “creep feed” because they have a feeding mechanism that when coupled with the correct grinding wheel can remove mass quantities of material that rival milling cutter removal rates. Used creep feed grinders are a frequent visitor to Bud's Machine Tools because they are so heavily built that they can be maintained for years and rebuilt over and over again.
